The Heel Project
By Diego Gutiérrez Monterrubio M.F.A.
The Heel Project Started in February of 2010, The Project was a concept that surfaced while I was reminiscing of the lifetime work of my mother who has been a dress designer for over 40 years. As a young boy, I watch her buy fabrics, create patterns, make spectacular cuts and designs and sew into the long hours of the night all for the passion of creating something original and divine. When her design was done, she would say to her assistants, “Now, it’s time for the most critical and powerful part of the entire design: Find the right Heels that says exactly who you are and THIS will make everything majestic”.
Here is my CONCEPT: Every woman has a pair of heels that “does” something or somehow impacts them in a certain way that they adore these heels. Some empower, some are sensual, some have been dealt with love and despair and some simply are sexy. Like a portrait, they tell a story of who you are, where you been, and where they will take you. I want to paint and share that story to the world.
Here is how you can JOIN: Pick your favorite heels. Send me 3-5 photos via email or text and along with the photos, ATTACH a one line sentence or a paragraph or a full page story of why they’re your favorite or what these heels do for you. Everyone has "special words" to attach to "their portrait”. I have received stories from several parts of the world that range from “I only wear my red satin heels when I read Jane Austin” to “These were the heels I was wearing when my received my Ph.D. and felt electricity run through my body from success”. The narrative story will then be juxtaposed next to the painting in a scheduled exhibit in SF and NYC for 2013/2014.
At this point, the Heel Project has been shared globally and most recently was received with great applause and intrigue in New York City in June of 2012 Thanks to everyone that has participated since 2010, The Heel Project has become an interactive global art exhibit and it makes it a very personal project for everyone. This endeavor has given me something very delicate to work with and I will probably paint this series for many years in recognition of my mother who has taught me so much about being true to your art and living it to the fullest.
